Poor Officiating & Player Safety

The Frustration Is Real

There’s nothing more frustrating than poor officiating in AAU basketball.

We hear all the reasons why we’re supposed to accept it—officials are human, they’re tired, they’re working multiple games. And that’s true. But accountability still matters.

Too often in these tournaments, there’s little to no accountability for poor officiating. And when the game starts getting out of control, frustration builds—from players, coaches, and the crowd.

Then the same officials get upset when people start chirping.

But here’s the reality…

When a game isn’t being properly officiated, players and coaches feel like they have to adjust—not strategically, but physically—just to protect themselves. That’s when the game shifts from competitive… to dangerous.

And that’s the issue.

When Safety Becomes the Priority

I don’t spend much time blaming officials. I truly don’t. But today tested that.

Our semifinal game became extremely physical—on both sides—and it reached a point where it felt like control was lost. That’s not about one team or the other… that’s about the responsibility to protect the players on the floor.

Because at the end of the day, this is about kids.

We were fortunate to battle through it, come out with a win, and grow through adversity. I’m proud of how our group responded. But both teams walked away with players banged up—and that part should never be ignored.

Giving Credit Where It's Due

Now let me be clear…

There are some outstanding officials in AAU. The ones who take pride in their craft. The ones who communicate, stay professional, and most importantly—prioritize player safety.

Those officials matter more than they know.

The Standard Should Always Be Higher

This game deserves consistency.

These kids deserve protection.

And the standard should always be higher.

Separation from the Pack.
